Winter Kayaking and new Gear

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Christmas came early this year. I just received the latest PFD from Stohlquist the “Descent.”

What better way to test it, and my new drysuit, then going out in some of the coldest conditions around. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is the coldest weather you’ll find anywhere. Through working at the local shop here in Marquette I met a guy named Bob, who is in charge of all the dams in the U.P. I gave him a call and found the Dead River to have enough flow for some December action. Here are the pictures from Chris Worlow and check out the vid. I used stop motion from a Canon 50D, so it is definately unique. Let me know what you think.

U.P. Winter in Stop Motion from ross herr on Vimeo.

Chris Worlow and Ross Herr went out on a seldom seen beautiful day of sunshine and snow. All of the whitewater shots were done with a Canon 50D shooting 13 pictures at 6 frames per second. The rest was shot on my JVC HD and my VIO POV 1.5

Shot at the Dead River. Ice dams were an issue so only a couple of rapids were runnable. 15 degrees Fahrenheit made for a cold one!

Green Week Wrap UP

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

So, the green week was amazing. From rolling in at 6am Monday morning, ‘till waking up after the insane party I was never bored. Woody is amazing for letting me crash at his beautiful pad, showing me down for my first Green River experience, and all the generous hospitality. Coming from Colorado I was skeptical if the Green would live up to all the hype the east coast is not afraid to create. The hype is mostly true and YouTube videos do not give your river justice. My final thoughts are that anyone that gets to run that river on a regular basis is very, very lucky. Race day was awesome and while I’m disappointed with flipping twice, I am that much more motivated to come back next year and do it all again. So, until next year, here are some more great pictures from Chris Worlow including training and race day. Please message me if you would like copies of any or would like to contact Chris. He was taking pictures all week.
